LS was started as a ministry to serve God by providing families with an affordable alternative to public school. We have always worked hard to offer a great program at an extremely affordable rate. The following is a breakdown of the cost per child and give you a high-level overview of the time and effort that goes into running LS. As you can see below, based on one child’s tuition fee, LS receives approximately $5.81/hour/child, at best. The cost to send one child to LS is $4500 per school year which is approximately 9 months at $500/month. Based on 129 days per school year that equals $34.88/day and 6 hours/day at $5.81/hour. And, the second child comes at a deep discount which dilutes the hourly rate even further. Also, the majority of the families have chosen the discounted option and only pay $4000 per year which equals $5.16/hour/child. Two children at $6600 per year would equal $4.26/hour/child.
In addition, this breakdown does not include the many additional hours of administrative work; teachers’ time spent on professional development; teachers’ time spent on developing and planning the curriculum; teachers’ time spent on classroom preparations; teachers’ time spent with parent communications; teachers’ time spent doing housekeeping of the facility; and many other responsibilities that are required of the teachers. The teachers dedicate and sacrifice many hours of their summers, and evenings and weekends throughout the school year to bring a strong Christian CM based education for the children.
We use AmblesideOnline curriculum plans because we believe it is the best but it is not an open and go curriculum and requires lots of preparation and training. This is not a complaint. Our desire is for understanding. We joyfully do the work that God has called us to do.
